TEHRAN (IQNA) – Tehran will host the 37th International Islamic Unity Conference starting later this week.

The conference will kick off here on October 1 with a speech by Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi, the secretary general of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST) said.

Speaking at a press conference in Tehran on Wednesday, Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari noted that the international event will run for three days.

He referred to Islamic cooperation for attaining common values as the main theme of the conference.

Friendship and kindness to Muslims, peaceful coexistence with followers of other faiths, and resistance against arrogant powers are among the values emphasized in the Holy Quran, he stated.

Hojat-ol-Islam Shahriari noted that 110 guests from 41 countries will take part in this year’s conference.

More than 200 papers by scholars and thinkers from 20 countries, including Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia have been submitted to the secretariat of the conference, he said.

The participants, including the foreign guests, will meet with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution on October 3, concurrent with the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), he went on to say.

The WFPIST annually organizes the conference in the Islamic Unity Week.

The 17th day of Rabi al-Awwal, which falls on October 3 this year, is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month (Thursday, September 28) as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
